Genre Analysis

The film Birth of a nation is an interesting film that was created by D.W. Griffith in 1915. Even though the film has been viewed as racist but it was a very popular film that was even liked by the president at the time. The film is about two families during the time leading to the Civil war through the time after the reconstruction of America, Griffith uses many aspects in his film to make it seem very sophisticated for the audience. Griffith’s film paints a clear understanding of his problem with the current position that the union has worked to put men of color in. This is a film that positions white people to be more superior than blacks in many ways.

The two pieces of art The Strivings of the Negro People and the Birth of a Nation are both opposite pieces of he shares the negative impact of the discourse that is common regarding individuals of color. Du Bois writes about his personal experiences, explaining the issues that have been presented to people of color as a result of being judged through the lens of living according to a white man’s standard. DuBois doesn’t agree with the discourse of the discourse communities during that time by using his personal experience to show evidence instead of the scientists using fake science to support his point of view. Griffiths film is a piece that already agrees with the peoples point of view. This shows that Griffith was a better author in influencing his audience to agree more with his claims.

When you have the top people in the community assume or make up rumors that people tend to be facts, the community most likely will follow towards that direction and aid them. Scientists in the past have made a theory that African Americans are inferior by the measuring their skulls. Everyone believed the theory and thought to be true due the lack of intelligence African Americans had. This made sure that the science of discourse community was able to show evidence that white people were obviously more superior. The multiliteracies during that time period needed to the whites to know they were superior and the blacks to be inferior. This has also been seen the film but Griffith were he makes it seem how innocent the white man is versus how dark, gloomy the black man was. This made it seem that any colored person would be bad would have a negative feeling towards them.

Well the concept of racist rhetoric has been present for a while and will always be present. Obviously not many people even realize that these territories exist this is the major issue with that. Since many people forget about these territories than there is no support for these territories to have from its own people.

Griffith had an idea and it was great idea to be portrayed with the society he lived in, a concept that isn’t used very often that would attract many people. He used the idea of a film to show what is happening. The film was spot on in many was portraying the lives of many people back in the early 1900’s. The fact he made white families look very innocent and living their lovely life and colored people or blacks being slaves and being lynched. Overall it was spot on film but obviously not the best.
